Persnickety Prints and The American Dream

"It’s not luck, it’s hard work. Persnickety Prints went from 0 to hero, completely bootstrapped in less than 3 years. Success in any aspect of life comes from hard work, perseverance and determination." -- Chari Pack, founder of Persnickety Prints

A passionate photographer and memory keeper, Chari Pack started Persnickety Prints in 2009 after seeing a need in the market for quality printing. Persnickety Prints is a professional photo lab and studio that uses state of the art technology to ensure the highest quality prints at incredibly affordable prices. And while they are "persnickety" over small details, taking the time and care to inspect every print before it's shipped, the user process for uploading and ordering your photos is anything but. A phone app and the ability to print from multiple platforms (including Facebook, Photobucket, Dropbox, Instagram & Flickr), make printing your memories easy and convenient.

And with a continuously growing company focused on storytelling, we couldn't wait for Chari to share her personal American Dreamer story:

"It’s not luck, it’s hard work. Persnickety Prints went from 0 to hero, completely bootstrapped in less than 3 years. Success in any aspect of life comes from hard work, perseverance and determination.

I cringe when people say to me, 'you’re so lucky you have your business'. There’s nothing lucky about it.

In 2009 I was a mother of 3 young energetic boys. I couldn’t keep up with traditional scrapbooking, but documenting memories was always a priority. Digital scrapbooking seemed doable so I took a community photoshop class and was ecstatic with the no mess ease of memory keeping! Sadly, I was let down when my printed layouts didn’t reflect the art I had created on screen. I found that there were thousands of women also scrapbooking digitally. They needed quality and affordable 12x12 prints too (professional photographic 12x12 prints average $10 each) and I was determined to make it happen for all of us.

Expensive chemical based machines process digital files like film, no ink, and they’re the most archival. By fine tuning the equipment, cleaning chemicals, balancing emulsions in the paper, and physically looking at every file printed, the end result is unmatched in quality.

I took risks to acquire this equipment and negotiated raw material costs promising volume in order to offer the lowest priced 12x12 ($1.99) and the best quality, guaranteed. Being completely bootstrapped (no funding) is scary, stressful and challenging. I had to do it on my own to control the creative freedom to build what I believed in.

Failure is inevitable. Prepare to hustle, fail, and then hustle again. Whatever your dream may be, the key is to stay the course.

Everything I am and know today is due to failure. If we’re afraid to fail, we’ll never succeed. I was ridiculed for starting a photo lab; 'nobody is printing pictures anymore' is what I heard over and over, but I was determined to prove them wrong.

I started my company over 3 times. It took 3 times to get it right. I’ve always stood strong to what I believed, the customer is always #1 because without our customers, we are nothing.

If I knew before I started this journey how hard it would be, I would never have started. Ignorance can be bliss and execution is mandatory. After 6 years of fine tuning our products and procedures, Persnickety Prints is a healthy, debt-free company growing every year.

The passion of storytelling through photos with a product that lasts a lifetime was always my driving force. Now a single mother of 3 boys, it is our livelihood. I don’t go one day without being grateful. I hope my boys will learn first hand how to work hard, follow their passions and never give up. I am living my American Dream."
