Raise your hand if you’ve ever repeated the same outfit in one week? That’s me, and I can’t decide if that means I’m lazy or a minimalist. Thanks to Netflix, minimalism is trending (thank you, internet gods!)- only instead of repeating the exact same outfits, we get a little creative. A capsule wardrobe includes several items that interchange to create a new wardrobe without emptying your bank account.
If you've ever stood in front of your jam-packed closet and exclaimed "I have nothing to wear!", the capsule wardrobe is calling your name, sister. Simplify your choices to make getting ready a breeze. Here's how to create an effortless fall capsule wardrobe out of eight classic pieces.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
In the 1970s, Susie Faux coined the term “capsule wardrobe” and suggested a collection of 12 items that could be worn year-round. Since then the idea has been popularized by fashion giants like Donna Karan and modern-day bloggers like Caroline Rector. True capsulistas use one capsule year-round, but at Cents of Style we are moderates on the capsule spectrum. An 8 item seasonal capsule wardrobe makes us oh-so giddy.
How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Clean out your closet
Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up taught us to pick up each item in our closets to see if it ‘sparks joy’. Prior to purchasing your capsule wardrobe, this may be a good idea if you have a lot of items that are taking up space in your drawers. A freshly organized closet is the perfect way to welcome the new clothes of your fall capsule.
A true capsule would last you an entire season. Use the Cents of Style fall mini-capsule to enhance your wardrobe after you've cleared space for a refresh.
- Wine boyfriend cardigan
- Floral print pencil skirt
- Striped button up shirt (Plus size version)
- High Rise Classic Jeggings or Distressed Jeggings
- Relaxed V-Neck blush sweater
- Short sleeve babydoll dress
- Unstructured Silver Loafers
- Faux Suede Open Toe Bootie
Using just your capsule wardrobe may sound a bit daunting, but it may be easier than you think. Set a number of days where you will pull only from your capsule. It may be 7 or 30. It’s ok to cheat just a little, but the goal is to see what you can live without. As much as we love the Kardashians, I'm betting none of us have an entire closet dedicated to shoes. Let your capsule wardrobe help you focus on quality rather than quantity.
Pairing the items in different ways transforms the way you feel about your outfit and yourself. Be sure to share your outfits using #mycentsofstyle - we love to see what you come up with!
