Bold And Full: Sojourner Truth

Our Bold and Full spotlight today is on Sojourner Truth (1797 – November 26, 1883), an abolitionist and women's rights activist.

Self-named Sojourner Truth was born Isabella Baumfree in 1797 in Swartekill, New York. Sojourner was an African-American born into slavery, but knew there was more to live for. In 1826 she escaped slavery with her infant daughter and found freedom. Sojourner was a devoted abolitionist and women’s rights activist, and she OWNED IT. “If women want any rights more than they’s got, why don’t they just take them, and not be talking about it.”

She spent her life devoted to various causes, and made an impact on many lives. In doing so met Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant. Find the Sorjourner Truth in yourself, be proud of the woman you are, and OWN IT!
