BOLD AND FULL: Emily Dickinson

Today's Bold and Full feature is Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886), an American poet.

Emily Dickinson is known for her poetry, but also wrote thousands of letters. Emily was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. At a young age Emily loved reading, being outdoors, gardening, and writing. Her JOY of writing increased into her twenties and thirties. She had a way with words and often described ordinary things in an extraordinary way. In her lifetime very few poems were ever published, however she continued to create passionately.

Emily wrote about life, pain, nature, death, love, and JOY. She was surrounded by illness and death, but through the trials she continued to write positive thoughts and radiate passion and joy. “Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is JOY enough.”

Despite her uplifting words, Emily became isolated, rarely leaving her home. After her death Emily’s sister discovered nearly 1,800 poems in hand bound books sewn by Emily herself. She is one of the most well-known American poets of all time. When surrounded by turmoil, search for the Emily in yourself, Create passionately, and radiate JOY.
