Bold and Full: Coco Chanel

Today's BOLD AND FULL FEATURE is Coco Chanel (19 August 1883 – 10 January 1971), a French fashion designer.

Coco Chanel was born as Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, but nicknamed Coco. She was born in Salmur, France on August 19, 1883 to an unwed mother, Eugenie Jeanne Devolli, who worked as a laundry woman. Her father, Albert Chanel, was a street vendor. Chanel had examples in her parents at a young age to CREATE something out of nothing.

Her mother Jeanne died when Coco was only twelve years old, and Coco and her sisters were sent to a convent orphanage. The challenges she endured didn’t stop her. Coco opened her first hat shop in 1910 under the name Chanel Modes, which was just the beginning of her career in fashion. Through HUSTLE and ambition, Coco built the Chanel brand into a fashion empire and became a prolific business woman with great social prominence as well. She is known for her “little black dress” and her timeless designs have been loved and admired since.

Coco Chanel used her CREATIVITY, and with CLARITY and a steadfast mind, she accomplished her goals. She CREATED an empire -- the House of Chanel -- and revolutionized fashion.

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” --Coco Chanel
